Abstract

Effective IT governance guarantees alignment of IT with business in order to maximize benefits, achieving organizational goals and optimal use of IT resources. Therefore in industries such as banking industry due to the dependency of their activities on IT, appropriate IT governance is no longer a “nice to have”, it is a “must have”. To achieve effective IT governance, an organization needs to employ well-designed, well-understood, and transparent governance mechanisms. A complete list of 30 IT governance mechanisms categorized in 3 groups: decision making structures, alignment processes and relational mechanisms were synthesized through the literature review and using the Qualitative Meta-Synthesis Methodology. In the next step, a group of domain experts were requested to modify the list to the specific characteristics of Iranian banking industry and as a final outcome, a list of 26 mechanisms for effective IT governance in Iranian banking industry was obtained. Then, designed and validated questionnaire of field studies was distributed among IT managers of 25 banks. The collected data were analyzed via statistical tests. Results indicated 12 mechanisms are strongly deployed among which the existence of an IT strategy committee, IT project steering committee, IT project tracking (time and budget control) and Motivation and incentive to follow the principles of IT governance have positive impact on effective IT governance in Iranian banking industry.

Abstract

IT governance is the ability to direct and organize information technology and identify the responsibilities between IT and business align with the organizational goals. This research intends to "survey the mediating role of operational coordination in the effect of strategy alignment on IT governance maturity”. The statistical population in the qualitative sector includes the IT experts and in the quantitative part is the senior managers of the IT and business departments of TCI. This study is an applied-developmental purpose and it is descriptive-survey in nature as well. The data collection tools are library resources, interviews, and a researcher-made questionnaire whose content validity has been verified by experts. The innovation of this study is to introduce the variable "Operational coordination" that leads to objectification of the "IT-Business strategy alignment” in order to realize the IT governance maturity. The research model was designed in two dimensions as a combination of Loftman's strategy alignment and business process management methodology (including 10 key components and 55 indicators). Its content validity and reliability were confirmed by experts using Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.936). Structural validity, structure and fit of the model were investigated by using structural equation modeling with SmartPLS software and the research hypotheses were tested. The results showed that the effects of both strategy alignment and operational coordination variables on the IT governance maturity were positive and significant. The Sobel test results also confirmed the mediating role of variable operational coordination in the effect of strategy alignment on IT governance maturity.

Abstract

Corebanking is a comprehensive and integrated system for responding timely and accurately to customer's demands and reporting their information. This task is done through various communication channels between customers and banks and a common database between all branches in order to staying in competition. For the optimum and strategical usage and utilizing IT in our goals path, we have to use a roadmap to implement new technologies. So far for different fields and usage and control of technologies this strategic roadmaps have been provided. COBIT as an IT governance framework is one of these frameworks which is used for both guide and control of IT in organizations. In this study, we provide a core banking IT governanvce model based on COBIT framework. For this reason we determine the activities required for operation of corebanking by using structural equation modeling and significance of relationship between COBIT processes and activities with the activities needed to achieve core banking. To allocate the sub-process of the COBIT for each of the activities of corebanking we used questionaries and Delphi technic.
